Based on letters found 50 years after the end of World War II, LAST LETTERS FROM MONTE ROSA is the story of the final days of a doomed German army platoon waiting out the end of the war in Northern Italy. It's 1944 and Lieutenant Brüchner (Thomas Pohn) leads a German reserve defensive unit hemmed in by guerrilla attacks from Italian partisans and desperate for food supplies and reinforcements from Mussolini's remaining loyalists. Hungry, filthy, and demoralized, the Germans suffer constant threat from the local partisans and allied bombings almost daily. Yet when the Italian reinforcements of Lieutenant Gianini (Fabio Sartor) arrive, they are reluctant to fight against fellow Italians in a war that many of them already see as a lost cause. A sobering look at at the final days of those who fought on the wrong side of history, LAST LETTERS FROM MONTE ROSA explores the differences in the values, morals, and patriotism of a very different era.

Although they were allies during WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union, fueled by their fundamental ideological differences, embarked on what would be called the Cold War starting in the post-WWII era. As both sides would eventually have nuclear and atomic bomb technology which potentially spelled the end of the world if used, both sides instead largely used propaganda to win the Cold War. The propaganda was both official (i.e. issued by the government) and unofficial, and was designed to make its own side look good while making the other side look bad. The propaganda was aimed to its own citizens, to the other side and to others around the world, who were often looking to the two superpowers for support. One problem often was that the propaganda had to match the reality that people saw and faced on the ground.

Rebound opens in a small mountain community which is rocked to its core when several local people who are presumed dead suddenly re-appear at their homes. Despite having passed away some years earlier, these ghostly characters appear in human form, they have not aged, and they are completely unaware of their own fatality. Determined to reclaim their lives and start over, they slowly come to realize that they are not the only ones to have been brought back from the dead. Their return augers torment for their community when a series of gruesome murders bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past. This is a homecoming like no other.
