Let Them Eat CakeIt's 1782 and welcome to the fabulous Palace of Versailles, France. Outside the gates, the peasants are on the verge of revolting (already well past vile), whilst inside lives one of the most hated, despised and loathed women in all of France - no, not Marie Antoinette - but Columbine, the Comtesse De Vache. Aided by her faithful maid Lisette, Columbine skulks around the palace uncovering the dark secrets of her fellow nobles, always leaving her well prepared to out-do jealous rival Madame De Plonge and her innocent yet sharp-witted daughter Eveline. Meanwhile, keeping her reputation as a classy lady is no easy chore. Whether it be a wig in the style of a 'glorious man of war, abreast in huge waves of hair' or a splendid dress to wear to a copulation, Columbine's acid-tongued courtier, Bouffant, strives the difficult task of keeping her at the forefront of French fashion.

L'humaniteIn a town near Lille, melancholy police superintendent Pharaon De Winter lives with his mother. An 11-year-old girl has been raped and murdered. Over the next week, De Winter investigates and grieves, his face nearly expressionless. He bikes, he gardens. He accompanies his neighbors, Joseph and Domino, to dinner and to the seaside; he even observes them in vigorous if not rough coitus. For Domino, sex seems her way of connecting. Does she fancy Pharaon? A plowed field, the sea, Pharaon's flowers, the pudenda of Domino and of the ravaged girl - this mix of images of beauty, evil, and possibility assaults Pharaon as he tries to do his job and hold on to his humanity.

| Le temps retrouvé, d'après l'oeuvre de Marcel ProustMarcel Proust (1871-1922) is on his deathbed. Looking at photographs brings memories of his childhood, his youth, his lovers, and the way the Great War put an end to a stratum of society. His memories are in no particular order, they move back and forth in time. Marcel at various ages interacts with Odette, with the beautiful Gilberte and her doomed husband, with the pleasure-seeking Baron de Charlus, with Marcel's lover Albertine, and with others; present also in memory are Marcel's beloved mother and grandmother. It seems as if to live is to remember and to capture memories is to create a work of great art. The memories parallel the final volume of Proust's novel.
